Senior Electric Power Engineer

Senior Electric Power Engineer

Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with a multidiscipline engineering group providing technical services to the renewable energy industry

  • Participate in power plant feasibility studies and due diligence reviews, existing facility condition assessment, design of electrical control and plant monitoring equipment, supervision of electrical equipment installation, power system design and studies, protective relay applications and settings, preparation of electrical equipment drawings and specifications and troubleshooting, repairs, and tests.

  • Electrical Engineering and design of hydro-electric projects, including drawings, specifications and supporting calculations

  • Design of electrical controls, SCADA communications and power system relay protection for facilities.

  • Other tasks as required to support project goals and business activities.

 Minimum Requirements:

  • 10+ years consulting/design experience in electrical power systems for utility or heavy industrial market

  • Registered Professional Engineer

  • Proven experience in sizing, specifying, reviewing vendor drawings and providing vendor surveillance for all types of industrial power apparatus inlcuding generators, rotating and static exciters, liquid filled and dry type transformers, circuit breakers, MV & LV switchgear, bus, motor control centers, lightning and surge protection, panelboards, DC systems, cable, cable support and terminations.

  • Proven experience in creating and reviewing engineering drawings including one-lines, three-lines, schematic diagrams, connection diagrams, riser diagrams, cable tray and conduit layout and physical electrical plans, elevations, and details.

  • Proven experience in performing calculations using loadflow/short circuit/arc flash programs and relay/breaker coordination using time-current characteristic curves.

  • Proven understanding and application of the NEC and NESC.

  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal, formal and informal

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous hydroelectric experience, especially pumped storage.

  • Previous utility experience.

  • Setting experience using Schweitzer and Beckwith relays.

  • Experience in integrating protection and control systems including modbus and DNP.

  • On site construction support and startup experience.

  • Proven ability in forensic investigation using oscillography and sequence-of-events.

  • Understanding of power system operations and control including steady-state and transient stability, economic dispatch, AGC and SCADA.

  • Basic understanding of transmission system equipment, operation and protection.

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering with Power Emphasis

Entry-Level Civil/Water Resources Engineer

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses of watersheds, rivers systems, spillways and penstocks as they relate to hydropower operation, design, licensing and safety.

  • Utilize software applications related to the fields of hydrology, hydraulics and water management (incl. HEC-1, HEC-RAS, HydroCAD)

  • Design and evaluate civil engineering projects in the areas of hydrology and rainfall-runoff modeling, hydraulic conveyance systems, civil-site development, dam safety, and erosion and sedimentation control

  • Assist in performing environmental evaluations under federal and state licensing requirements

  • Develop and use CHEOPS™, an in-house proprietary software application that simulates the operation of reservoir and hydropower facility systems 

  • Work closely with clients and agencies

  • Occasional travel within the continental U.S.

Minimum qualifications for this position are: 

  •  B.S. in Civil Engineering, Hydrology or other closely related field

  •  Strong communication skills

  •  Strong technical writing skills

  •   Strong computer skills, esp. with Microsoft Excel

Desired Qualifications:

  • Coursework or experience in open channel hydraulics, surface water hydrology, water management, fluid mechanics, GIS or numerical methods

  • The ability to become an E.I.T. or P.E.

  • Programming skills in Microsoft Visual Basic, Visual Basic for Applications, .NET, Java, MATLAB or other language

  • Familiarity with the HEC software suite, including HEC-1, HEC-RAS, HEC-ResSim, HEC-HMS, HEC-DSS

  • Direct experience in hydropower, dam/reservoir engineering

Civil/Structural Engineer

Responsibilities include:

  • Involvement in various hydro power projects in North America

  • Maintaining client relationships through the successful management of projects of small to moderate size

  • Preparing proposals, ensuring the satisfactory performance of hydrology and hydraulic studies, reinforced concrete and steel design, preparation of construction plans, and construction observation and materials testing

Professional qualifications include:

  • Experience designing heavy concrete and steel structures for power and industrial facilities

  • Working knowledge of ACI and AISC codes, and computer applications

  • Solid background and interest in power and water resources

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/structural engineering; and advanced degree is advantageous

  • Registered Professional Engineer or ability to obtain same within three months is desirable

  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years experience, preferably in the areas described below:

  • Project engineer or Project Management assignment on multidisciplinary projects

  • Client contact and marketing

  • Design/analysis of hydraulic structures

  • Structural design of concrete and steel structures

  • Field experience related to hydraulic structure construction, inspection, or related instrumentation

Additional Skills

  • Proficiency in computer usage with fundamental knowledge/training in finite element analysis

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Entry to Mid-level Civil/Structural Engineer

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing various project production and design activities including: overall project design and the details associated with preparing the design, coordination of the work effort with technical staff, and permitting and certification of projects.

  • Assisting project engineers and managers with water resources civil engineering, generally relating to the planning, design, layout and construction of hydro power engineering projects

  • Some travel will be required. The amount and duration of travel depends upon the project requirements but are generally expected to be short in duration and within 100 miles of home office

Qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of general Microsoft programs and able to adapt to technical design software applicable to civil engineering applications including AutoCAD and Microstation drafting tools

  • Knowledge and understanding of water and utilities, including hydraulic evaluations design, review of field survey and related information, storm water drainage, permitting and other related services

  • Capable of executing project tasks in a team environment including directing technical support staff in the preparation of analysis, design, drawing production, and specification development

  • Minimum of 1 to 4 years experience in general civil engineering

  • BS in Civil Engineering with course work or experience in ACI and AISC design

  • Needs to be a self-motivated individual willing to invest the time necessary to learn the requirements of the position

  • Passage of EIT Fundamentals and eligible to obtain PE within 4 years

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Major responsibilities and duties: 

Work with a multi-discipline group of engineers and technicians providing engineering and design services to the hydroelectric industry.  Projects include life extension and upgrade of existing power generating facilities as well as new power generation facilities.

Responsibilities are expected to include:

  • Performing feasibility studies

  • Preparing project cost estimates

  • Preparing procurement and design specifications

  • Performing equipment and contractor bid evaluations

  • Producing mechanical system designs

  • Providing field support during installation, testing and start-up of hydro equipment in the field

  • Performing hydro facility condition assessments

  • Providing project management of projects including cost tracking, schedule tracking and client invoicing

  • Support of licensing and regulatory activities

  • Interfacing with clients

  • Support of business development and marketing activities

Essential qualifications: 

  • Bachelor Of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited university or college

  • Licensed Professional Engineer

  • A minimum of 10 years previous experience including experience in design and operational support of conventional hydroelectric generating stations

  • Experience with the design, manufacture, testing and operation of hydro generating station mechanical equipment including turbines, pump-turbines, pumps, valves, compressors and other mechanical components

  • Experience with preparing procurement and design specifications for new installations as well as upgrade of existing equipment

  • Experience with design of power station mechanical systems (e.g., cooling water, lube oil, governor hydraulics, compressed air, HVAC)

  • Previous experience with the design and installation of mechanical system / component upgrades for existing hydroelectric generating stations

  • Proficiency in the use of PC software: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook

Desired qualifications:

  • Previous experience with design and operational support of pumped storage hydroelectric stations

  • Previous experience with the mechanical design, manufacture, testing and operation of hydro generators and generator-motors

  • Previous experience with conventional hydraulic turbine and pump-turbine model testing

  • Previous experience with performing hydro water conveyance system hydraulic transient analyses

  • Previous experience with acquisition due diligence activities

  • Previous experience working for an engineering consulting firm

  • Previous experience with supervision of mechanical engineering and design personnel.

  • Experience with graphics software such as Delta Graph

  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCad or Microstation

  • Experience with Microsoft Project or Primavera

  • Previous experience with business development and marketing of engineering services.

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day leadership of a project team assigned to perform dam stability evaluations and design and construct new dams or dam stability modifications needed to meet Federal Energy Regulatory Commission criteria. 

  • Preparation of work scopes, schedules and budgets

  • Monitoring the quality, schedule and budget of ongoing work

  • Frequent interaction with subcontractors, clients and regulatory personnel

  • Report preparation and presentations

  • Recruiting and development of staff

  • Business development and other tasks as required to support project goals and other DTA business activities.

The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering

  • Professional Engineer certification

  • Ten or more years of geotechnical experience including planning and execution of geotechnical site exploration programs, preparation of geotechnical analysis and design calculations including stability evaluations of dams and/or slopes, and design of significant heavy civil engineering projects

  • Prior experience leading and mentoring teams of engineers and scientists

  • Prior experience working with regulatory agencies

  • Experience providing engineering support for heavy civil construction projects

  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with project staff, DTA management, client representatives, subcontractors and regulatory personnel

Field work and some overnight travel will be required.
